CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The precinct door swung closed with a thud, the sterile scent of hand sanitizer and stale coffee mingling in the air. Ivy Pane brushed off the grit from her jacket, the pain from the chase earlier that day throbbing beneath her skin. Sean O'Rourke was close behind, his boots echoing on the linoleum as they entered the bullpen.

A constellation of navy blues and grays gathered in the center, eyes fixed on the glow of a computer screen. The room buzzed with tense whispers, punctuated by the staccato clicks of a keyboard. Ivy's gaze locked onto the screen, reading the newest message from their killer, the words sending a chill down her spine.

Don't interfere. You're not the only ones who work to enforce the Law. Death comes for us all.

Sean exhaled beside her as they finished reading. “Yeah. I’m thinking Frank Harriman was a mistake, after all. This is definitely about the near-death experiences.”

"Do we have a source?" Ivy asked. Her eyes never left the message, each word sinking its hooks deeper into her resolve.

"Maybe," replied a tech expert, the fluorescent light casting shadows across his features as he spun in his chair to face them. "Traced it back to a digital footprint at a library downtown."

"Surveillance footage?" Ivy queried, hope flickering like a candle in the draft.

The tech's lips pressed into a line, his head shaking with reluctance. "Nothing. Whoever this is, they’re careful. Ghost-like."

Ivy's hand clenched into a fist at her side, the frustration tangible. The killer remained an enigma, slipping through their fingers like water. She exchanged a glance with Sean; both understood the gravity of the situation. Their adversary was mocking them, hidden within the city's concrete labyrinth.

"Keep digging," Ivy commanded, her voice steady despite the pounding of her heart. "Every second counts."

Sean placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his presence a silent vow of solidarity. Together, they had faced down demons, piecing together puzzles of human depravity. This time, though, the challenge was different; the stakes were personal.

Ivy's gaze lingered on the stark black lettering, each word a serrated edge that cut through the haze of information. The killer’s message, displayed on the computer screen, seemed to pulse with an insidious life of its own. Don't interfere. You're not the only ones who work to enforce the Law. Death comes for us all.

"Death," she murmured, her eyes narrowing as she dissected the word, tasting its morbidity. There was something chillingly familiar in the way it was wielded, like a weapon forged in intimate knowledge. Her mind flickered back to the victims, each having brushed shoulders with the reaper before. This killer didn’t just study their files; he savored the trauma that clung to them, a connoisseur of their darkest moments.

Sean leaned in, his brow furrowed, the muscle in his jaw working silently. Ivy felt the presence of the other officers around them, their curiosity palpable, but her focus remained laser-sharp on the taunting words.

"Could be an obsession," Sean replied, his tone matching the gravity of her observation.
